The compact disc has gained its popularity by its use for recording and packaging movies, burning audio and even saving/storing files from a computer for business and personal use. It is known that the digital data on these discs will not be destroyed or corrupted as with earlier media but over time its quality and performance can be affected. This usually happens when the disks become damaged physically or even if it were to get scratched. With technology there are now devices that can restore the CD to its original condition by removing the scratches; these are known as CD scratch removers.

One very familiar and widely used CD scratch remover is the Disc Doctor. This was invented in Australia approximately twelve years ago, by a past employee of Video Ezy. The following are the basic steps in using any one of these machines:

1. Place the CD in the disc holder upside down. You will need to press it firm into the holder. Depending on the brand of CD scratch removal kit. their design may differ but the procedure will be the same.

2. Locate the non label side of the CD and spray it with the cleaning chemical found in the kit. You can choose to only spray the damaged part of the CD if you want to conserve the solution.

3. Lock it by placing the disc holder firmly into the crank wheel.

4. You want the CD to turn counter clockwise so you have to turn the reversibility lever right. You can choose to turn the crank until the damaged part or scratch part is covered or you can cover the whole CD.

5. Move the switch to the left, spray the CD again. This process needs to be repeated whilst the disc is moving in a clockwise direction.

6. Remove and dry the CD using the drying cloths included in the kit. Using the felt Square, place the CD with its label part down onto the cloth and you can start buffing it in a circular motion. Clean the disc with the cloth.
